CMAP / RTA Joint Call for Projects!
Now is the time to apply for Local Technical Assistance
 Planning assistance for local projects is now available through two regional programs: the Regional Transportation Authority (RTA) Community Planning Program and the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP) Local Technical Assistance Program (LTA). While the RTA and CMAP have separate technical assistance programs, applicants can apply for both programs by using one application. Through this coordination, the RTA and CMAP are able to offer planning and implementation assistance to an expanded base of eligible applicants. Proposed local planning projects should implement recommendations of the GO TO 2040 Plan.

CHA-CHIP Stakeholder Kick-Off Event
Interactive event seeks to maximize the efficiency, effectiveness and performance of local public health systems
On May 29th, the Kane County Health Department successfully hosted the Kane County Community Health Assessment (CHA) Stakeholder Kick-Off Event. This event was the first step in the new Community Health Assessment and Community Health Improvement Plan (CHIP) development process that will identify  critical health issues in our community and create a plan to address them. This interactive event was facilitated by various public health leaders and utilized keypad polling and affinity diagrams to build consensus around a core group of values and develop a unified vision for the plan updates.
Over the next year, the Kane County Health Department will be working with area hospitals, health providers, social service organizations and health advocates to gather information and prioritize the health issues that need to be addressed.

KCPC Named Finalist for 2014 Urban Land Institute Vision Award
Cooperative among seven finalists for prestigious planning award
The Kane County Planning Cooperative (KCPC) was named as a finalist for the 2014 Urban Land Institute Vision Awards! The KCPC will be up against six other finalists in the Program Category. The winners will be announced at a presentation dinner on June 4th at the Redmoon Theater in Chicago. This designation recognizes the KCPC's innovative Healthy People, Healthy Living, Healthy Communities approach to planning. The KCPC is the primary implementation mechanism for the Kane County 2040 Plan and it combines the County's health, transportation and land use planning efforts in an attempt to provide resources for the County's thirty municipalities as well as leverage and increase access to grants and technical assistance. Kane County has positioned itself at the forefront of health planning in the region and continues to take steps towards achieving the goal of having the healthiest residents in Illinois by the year 2030.

Carpentersville Receives Grant for Health Impact Assessment
CMAP and Kane County Partner to Advance Health in the Region
Kane County and CMAP have awarded the Village of Carpentersville a grant providing technical assistance for a health impact assessment (HIA). This HIA will focus on the intersection of Washington and Main Street and will include the nearby
Fox River Trail. The HIA will analyze multiple land use and transportation improvements which will affect traffic, safety and overall health. This analysis will allow the project team to make evidence-based recommendations regarding potential infrastructure improvements. A project kick-off meeting will be held in July.
This project will provide an example of HIA for the region and it will allow the County to train CMAP on how to conduct an HIA, based on training County staff received in 2012 in preparation for the Growing for Kane HIA.

Kane County Promotes Progressive Planning Efforts at Regional Events
KCPC featured for work in local foods, green infrastructure and community health
Over the last month, Kane County Planning Cooperative (KCPC) staff have presented at a couple of notable events. Jackie Forbes - Kane County Health Planner- presented at the Illinois Public Health Institute's "Health in All Policies" workshop on May 6th in Chicago. She detailed the process and work involved with integrating the Kane County Health Department, Development Department and the Division of Transportation. She detailed how new inter-departmental relationships were formed, goals were synthesized and strategies are now being implemented through the KCPC. Mark VanKerkhoff, Janice Hill and Karen Miller, all from the Kane County Development Department, presented at the GreenTown Chicago conference on May 22nd. Mark outlined the many ways Kane County incorporates health into planning, Janice described the work being done on the County's locally grown foods program, Growing for Kane, and Karen highlighted the process of developing and implementing the Kane County 2040 Green Infrastructure Plan.

EPA Brownfield Redevelopment Grant Writing Workshop
Learn how to successfully apply for EPA assistance
On June 10th, the Association for Redevelopment Initiatives (ARI) will host the "Effective EPA Grant Writing for Redevelopment" workshop in Des Plaines. This workshop will focus on how to successfully apply for EPA funding for the rehabilitation of brownfield sites. This workshop will outline strategies that will enable the successful writing of grants and it will highlight a case study of a community that successfully utilized brownfield grants to implement a redevelopment project. EPA Brownfield Grants can be an essential resource for identifying, assessing and remediating brownfield sites in your community. This funding is nationally competitive and grantees are required to submit detailed applications, the preparation of which can be both challenging and time consuming. This is a critical session to attend for those looking to pursue upcoming EPA grants. The ARI is a member-based, non-profit, educational organization that promotes the reuse and redevelopment of underutilized and blighted sites. Registration for this workshop is $45 for ARI members and $75 for non-members.
